The Uspallata district is crossed by the Mendoza River and the San Alberto watercourse, a vital resource for the local population and agricultural activities. Since 2008, when a first mining company expressed interest in the region, the community has been consistently denouncing the risk of pollution and the impact on water — a central issue for the valley’s survival. Despite sustained opposition from the local population, the mining project, led by Swiss company Solway Investment Group, has been attempting to establish itself in the region for seventeen years, backed by local government and its economic interests.
Mauricio Cornejo was held for 23 days without access to medical treatment, before being placed under house arrest. These charges make highly contested use of Article 213 of the Argentine Penal Code — a provision inherited from the dictatorial period — which allows the criminalisation of social movement members on the basis of mere membership.
Despite this persecution, Mauricio Cornejo continues his commitment to the protection of water, nature, and the well-being of his community. His courage in the face of criminalisation is emblematic of the determination of environmental defenders to protect their territories.
