When Egor was arrested in Kirovsk, in the Leningrad region, after attempting to throw Molotov cocktails at the military recruitment office, he immediately admitted the offence, but made it clear that it was a symbolic act of protest against the war in Ukraine. Initially charged with destruction of property, he was soon accused of a ‘terrorist act’ and placed in custody.
Egor’s trial opened in October 2023 before a military court in St Petersburg. He admitted throwing the flaming bottles but firmly denied any terrorist intent. He explained that his gesture was a symbolic act to protest the war, the enrolment and the suffering of civilians in Ukraine. None of the bottles caused a fire, and no injuries were reported. On 22 November 2023, Egor was sentenced to six years in prison.
Egor Balazeïkine’s case reflects a worrying trend in which the Russian authorities are criminally prosecuting minors for acts of protest. The authorities must respect and protect the rights of children, including their right to freedom of expression and to detention conditions that are compatible with their health and age.
Egor Balazeïkine is one of 922 political prisoners listed by the NGO Memorial.
