I give you thanks, Lord, I give thanks unto you, the one and only,
You who plumb our hearts, just and compassionate King.
However do not let me undergo someday pains, trials
or tribulations which go beyond my strength.
But grant me to always come through them, Oh my God,
and the strength to endure the sorrows.
For it is you, who from the beginning, are the bestower of goods
to those who, from the depth of their soul, kneel in dignity before your face.
You distribute to them the gifts of faith and works
and holy expectations and all the presents of your divine and lovely Spirit.
Oh merciful one, now, always, without end forever and evermore.
Amen.
Simeon, the new theologian (949 – 1022)
