A Honduran migrant, was arrested in Arriaga, Chiapas, in May 2013, while departing for the United States.
He was tortured: insults, threats, beatings, asphyxiation attempts made with a plastic bag and simulacrum of drowning. He was also asked to leave his fingerprints on documents he could not read. Following those events, he was sentenced to 5 years in prison for "extorting" other migrants.
Roberto Carlos denounced these tortures.
A medical examination conducted in 2015 concluded that these allegations were plausible. However, there was no investigation. There is no evidence of any migrants from whom Roberto Carlos is alleged to have stolen. No confrontation was possible either.
Roberto Carlos should have been granted parole in February 2017, which did not happen.
He has undertaken several hunger strikes in order to have his innocence recognized and his rights upheld. This has had consequences on his health but the prison staff refuses to provide him with the care he needs. What can you do?
