Abdellahi Matalla Saleck et Moussa Bilal Biram
Mauritania

Activists of the Initiative for the Resurgence of the abolitionist movement (IRA). Since December 19th, 2016, they are detained in the prison of Bir Moghrein, an isolated high security penitentiary
in the desert, located in northern Mauritania. Further than 1,200 km away from their homes in Nouakchott, they are cut off from the rest of the world and never get any visitors.

On November 18th 2016, Mr. Saleck and Mr. Biram were sentenced, without any supporting evidence, to three years of imprisonment because they participated in a Nouakchott rally which was intended to defend the inhabitants of a shantytown against expropriation, but which degenerated in clashes with the police. One of those years will be served on probation.

These two men have always denied participating in this event, held at the end of June 2016, and consider their punishment to be an intimidation tactic aimed at the IRA. At the beginning of July 2016, while in holding, they suffered torture. No investigation was launched. IRA-Mauritania was created in 2008: the Mauritanian authorities still have not recognized its NGO status despite several requests.

For several years, members of the IRA have been subject to an uninterrupted wave of
intimidations, arrests and, legal harassment designed to reduce this organization to nothing.

What can you do?

PRAY FOR THEM. PRAY FOR THEIR FREEDOM.
