Francisco, a 66 year-old indigenous Tsotsil farmer from the Chiapas region, has been actively engaged in protesting the implantation of mega development projects in his community. On the morning of May 29, 2015 ten police officers picked him up at Venustiano Carranza and, while insulting and hitting him, brought him to a house where they tortured him. They undressed him, hit him with their fists and feet and subjected him to electrical shocks. The police wanted Francisco, who can neither read nor write, to sign a confession admitting his guilt in a violent armed robbery. Since that day Francisco has remained in preventative custody in the El Amate prison. He still suffers from important physical and psychological consequences from the abuse to which he was subjected during his arrest. Fry Bartolomé, a Mexican NGO, has requested the help of our ACAT network towards obtaining Francisco’s liberation as well as his compensation. What can you do?
